I was lucky to come across the series of anatomy books published by Books of Discovery. These books present superficial anatomy and palpation to the professional dedicated to Physical Therapy and Sports or Therapeutic Massage.

One of the areas most forgotten in Clinical Anatomy is superficial anatomy. For medical students the anatomy curriculum is being shortened and shortened due to the need to dedicate time to other difficult topics such as biochemistry and cellular biology. As the rate of discovery in the medical sciences increases, the time that a physician and/or a medical student can dedicate to anatomy is constrained.

The art of palpation of muscles and joints is beautifully presented in this series of books and multimedia which I strongly recommend. These materials present a wealth of knowledge to the Health Care Professional. This series of books also includes instructor manuals which not only are easy to read but easy to put into practice.

Trail Guide to the Body DVD (Video Guide to Palpation)

The new Trail Guide to the Body DVD, a 3-disc set, is an outstanding resource for both students and instructors. This 4-hour series closely parallels the presentation of muscles (and related structures) in the 3rd Edition of Trail Guide to the Body. Clint Chandler, LMP, an award winning instructor, leads the learner in specific palpation techniques to locate, identify and palpate more than 80 muscles. The menu format allows viewers to quickly navigate to the muscle they would like to see demonstrated with multiple camera angles.

The DVD format also allows the viewer to "freeze" the action at any point without a loss of image quality as well as repeat a sequence or watch the action in slow motion. In keeping with the spirit of Trail Guide, the video is both fun and loaded with accurate anatomical information. Actual images from the book are incorporated and, where appropriate, overlaid on the video. The DVD can be played on a television or shown "super-sized" on a screen with a projection monitor.
