CHILE This page is dedicated to increase the tourism awareness for Chile. I will present here my favorite places, restaurants, museums, etc. I will try to maintain it as updated as possible. Once again, the use of this material for your own trip is recommended, but the final decision and the final results are your own responsibility. Dr. Efrain Miranda - Clinical Anatomy Associates, Inc. The page of Turismo Chile is in English and will help you program your trip. The official Web Site of the Tourism Board in Chile is in Spanish. CHILEAN RESTAURANTS IN THE USA I have visited three Chilean Restaurants in the USA. Two are my favorites and here is their information, you will not be dissapointed: MIAMI - Pamela's Delicatessen This restaurant is virtually a "hole in the wall" Small, but with great ambience, warmth, and great food. I truly go out of my way to go to Pamela's everyday when I visit Miami. Reasonable prices make the visit even more enjoyable. The address is: 8499 Bird Road, Miami, FL 33155 and their phone is (305) 265-4045 Mapquest map for Pamela's Delicatessen Just three blocks from Times Square, this Chilean Restaurant is In the middle of Broadway action. I strongly recommend this restaurant. With great appetizers and even more delectable entrees, it is a great way to start (or end) an evening in Broadway. Pomaire had a great selection of Chilean Wines. They are located at 371W. 46th St, New York, NY 10036. Their phone is (212) 956-3056. The owner, Mr. Denic Catalan will guide you through the different dishes and wines. Mapquest map for Pomaire in NYC
RESTAURANTS IN CHILE ANGUS RESTAURANT My favorite restaurant in Chile is the ANGUS RESTAURANT. Unfortunately its life may be short, as their lease on the property is close to expiring. If you are lucky enough to be able to go, please do so. Tell them that Don Efrain Miranda sent you and I am sure you will be treated like royalty! Their signature appetizer is the Mushroom toast, and their meats and seafood are delectable. I recommend their Chilean wines selection. Address: El Bosque Norte 0111, Providencia, Phone: (2) 232-2683 ISLA NEGRA RESTAURANT This is my best choice for seafood. Their selection is incredible! Try their sea urchin (Uni) al pilpil, or the ostiones parmesana (Coquille saint jacques parmesan) as appetizers; for entrees, you are on your own. There is not a bad plate in the house! You will be amazed at the variety of fresh fish, and their dessserts. Make sure you ask for a pisco sour, the Chilean national drink. At this restaurant you can ask for a "pisco sour light" meaning that you are low on carbs, whatever, you are not on vacation to lose weight are you? The last time I was there, they had entertainment with a fabulous duo. They will play Chilean, Uruguayan, USA music. They are the Dueto America. They have valet parking and all you need to do is get to their door and be treated, once again, like royalty! This is not really a restaurant as you may think. Located in downtown Santiago there is a market (Mercado Central) where fresh fish and vegetables arrive very early every day. Donde Augusto is a series of small places situated in the center of the market where you will be treated to fresh fish and typical Chilean cuisine. Start with a pisco sour (again) try the machas parmesana (parmesan razor clams) and from there on the sky is the limit. You will see a number of local artists singing Chilean music for your enjoyment. Do not forget to tip them, this is their livelyhood. You will enjoy this place. A word of caution, use a taxi. There are not a lot of parking places and after all that pisco sour and Chilean wine, you will probably need a taxi anyhow. How to get there? just hail cab and say "Al mercado central, por favor". One thing that is very interesting is how there are a number of people trying to get you to eat at their restaurant. They will try to see where are you from and find someone that speaks (not much) of your native tongue. Just ask for "Donde Augusto". This is a great place to get good typical Chilean food and at a reasonable price. Ask for Don Julio Lobos, the chief of the dining room, and you will get preferential treatment. You can start with (you guessed right!) a pisco sour. They have great sopaipillas, which are small flat bread-like appetizers which you can eat with pebre, or with a delectable garlic mush they make in-house. If you are traveling with your couple, make sure they also eat it, garlic breath will last for hours! The specialty of the house is "plateada" sort of a corned beef brisket that can be served in many different presentations. make sure you try it. A good Italian restaturant. Go to their web page. Good italian recipes. Try the antipasto! It is awesone. Good service. Note: This is a page dedicated to my own interests. Bear in mind that being what it is, this page reflects personal views and experiences, and should be read with that consideration. The material, experiences, links, etc. mentioned in this page worked for me and I hope they work for you, but that is your responsibility. Dr. Efrain A. Miranda |
